Maniac

They crept along the corridor, Traxia checking the blind corners. She and Evrist kept their private comm running; she didn’t want Three to hear what they were saying. She wasn’t even sure Three was still herself anymore, but she wasn’t taking any chances. This was one of the occasions in which she was glad the Mettle wasn’t big enough for hypervators. Had that been the case, Three would have had control of those as well, potentially stranding them. But since the only access to other decks was via ladders, she and Evrist managed to make it up to the bridge without much trouble. She’d expected to find Marb up there, directing things, but the large room was empty. It was strange seeing no one on duty, though she assumed Three was piloting them to their destination, whatever that was. Traxia checked her consoles on the captain’s station to find main propulsion access had been locked out, along with a host of other programs, such as weapons and armor. She’d briefly considered the Mettle might try to shoot at them if it saw them approaching from that cargo ship, but had decided it was worth the risk. It was nice to know it couldn’t have fired if it had wanted to.

She smiled, recognizing Dev’s handiwork. He’d somehow locked out Marb, giving her just the chance she needed to retake this ship. Now all they had to do was find the man. That white mist still clung to the deck plating, but as long as they kept their helmets on, they should be okay. “How much air do these things have?” she asked.

“Um,” Evrist said. “Let’s just be quick. There’s a status display on your helmet if you activate it.”

She tapped the control unit on her wrist and vital data came up on the transparent part of the helmet in front of her face. “Six minutes? Is that it?”

“I told you, I haven’t used these things in a while. I didn’t expect an impromptu siege. If you’d let me know you were coming maybe I could have filled them up for you.”

She ignored his sarcastic tone. “Let’s just get down to Engineering. If he’s anywhere else on this ship, it’ll be there.”

They were careful making their way down through the rest of the ship. Traxia kept expecting Three to throw more roadblocks in their way, but it seemed the only defense was the mist. Maybe Three wasn’t even active anymore and Marb had automated the pilot’s station to take them wherever it was he wanted to go. Still, she stayed on her toes, watching for anything that might be coming around the next bend.

She and Evrist made it down to deck four without any other issues, though as they approached Engineering she slowed, staying as quiet as possible. She made a quick check of the corner, only to see the rooms empty of anyone, but all the systems still seemed to be running at full blast.

“I thought he was supposed to be here,” Evrist said, frustration painted on his face.
